Issues Notes
Form 990 is a public relations document
Learning how to use the Form 990 federal tax information return as a public relations document, and particularly how to avoid some of its easiest pitfalls, will be the subject of an afternoon break-out session at “This Year in Nonprofit Law” sponsored by Nonprofit Issues and the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery McCracken on Tuesday, November 29.
Catherine H. Gillespie and Richard Hartmann of Montgomery McCracken’s Health, Education and Nonprofit Law Group will lead the discussion. With the returns instantly available on the Internet, more donors and other interested viewers are looking at material that is often given only cursory review by the filing agency. It makes sense to look at it carefully.
Melanie Herman, executive director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center in Washington and frequent contributor to our Risk and Reward series, will be the featured speaker of the morning sessions. She will review charities’ insurance needs and how to assure that a charity gets the protection it needs.
Other panels will review the major developments during the last year, ethical issues for lawyers and directors, what to do when the bequest matures, the top 10 mistakes employers make, employee benefit law, and assuring accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The program offers five hours of continuing education credits for lawyers and accountants in Pennsylvania, including one hour of ethics credits for lawyers who attend the ethics sessions.
Participants will receive a new or renewed one-year subscription to Nonprofit Issues. The program will be held at Montgomery McCracken’s office at 123 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, from 9:00 to 3:45.
