“This Year in Nonprofit Law” will focus
on developments in Washington
Nonprofit Issues and the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads will present the 14th “This Year in Nonprofit Law” on Thursday, December 2.
Sheri A. Brady, Public Policy Director of the National Council of Nonprofit Agencies, will report from Washington on the new initiatives of the IRS and the Senate Finance Committee in the featured session of the of the morning. NCNA is in the middle of the discussions about potential changes in public policy.
The full-day program will follow the traditional format. The first session will review the other major legal developments of the last year, including the IRS efforts of excess benefits taxes, the uninsured patient litigation claiming charitable hospitals have violated their charitable obligations, the Barnes Foundation case in Pennsylvania and other topics.
Afternoon break out sessions will include: ethical issues for lawyers and directors; starting a charitable gift annuity program; employment law update; managing major transactions and controlling legal fees; employee benefit law update; and the Standards of Excellence program of the Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations. All of the sessions are designed to allow significant interaction with the participants.
The program provides 5 hours of continuing legal education credit, including one hour of ethics, and 5 hours of continuing professional education credit for accountants in Pennsylvania.
Participants will receive a new or renewed subscription to the electronic version of Nonprofit Issues, plus a notebook of articles, outlines and other citations. The program starts at 9 a.m. and runs to 3:45, with lunch included. The registration fee is $145 for the first participant from an organization and $85 for each additional registrant. Those requesting Pennsylvania CLE credit must pay an additional $10 for processing.
The program will be held in the firm’s offices at 123 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia.
