Volunteers Protected From Claim for Wages
Volunteer members of
a nonprofit Board of directors are protected by the federal Volunteer
Protection Act against personal liability for failure to pay proper
wages under the Fair Labor Standards Act, according to a federal
District Court in Arizona.
The Court, which found that the nonprofit was insolvent and could
not pay wages claimed by its former president, has dismissed the
claim against the members of the Board. (Armendarez v. Glendale
Youth Center, No. CV-99-1379, 5/20/03.)
