The Bankruptcy Court in Oregon has held that the principal of a $36 million “charitable trust” originally established in 1981 for the benefit of the Catholic Archdiocese and other Catholic programs is protected from creditors’ claims against the Archdiocese of Portland, while the income is part of the bankrupt’s estate subject to restrictions on use set out in the trust.
