Most Form 990 returns contain errors that are obvious on their face, or at least raise significant questions about the organization’s activities or reporting. Some of them are just sloppy, like not making the columns add up. Others raise more fundamental questions, like having no fundraising costs when getting significant contributions. Most fail to present program service accomplishments in a way that gives a sense that funds are being spent wisely. Now that people are looking, and comparing, it makes sense to get it right.
