Protect Your Mission by Preparing for the Worst
Bad news comes in threes. In the past three weeks, the Center has provided advice to three organizations responding to accidents or deaths of an employee, a service recipient and a volunteer. The circumstances facing the nonprofits varied. One involved an incident of workplace violence resulting in the physical injury of a staff member. The second dealt with allegations of abuse of a vulnerable client. The third ended in death of a participant in a fundraising event.
The purpose of this article is to share the core elements of the advice given to the leaders of these three organizations that will provide nonprofit leaders with an appropriate response to the victims and their families in the face of the tragedy, while preparing them with sound steps to protect the nonprofit’s mission.
