I love the label “friendraising”. The original poster asked if there were any accounting things to watch out for and the answer is no. In fact, the accounting for such an event can clearly be a project focused on and accounted for as awareness (which donors like to see) as opposed to having any sort of fundraising expense label. I agree that you should always ask and have an opportunity to accept donations.

Unless there is absolutely no intent to do fundraising at the event or with the participants shortly thereafter, I think the cost of this event ought to be accounted for as a fundraising expense but you ought to consult you accountant for that conclusion.  It is one of those areas where reasonable people may reach different conclusions.  --Don Kramer
