24th Annual This Year in Nonprofit Law

Nonprofit Issues® and the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery McCracken will present the 24th annual “This Year in Nonprofit Law” on Tuesday, November 18.

Melanie Herman, Executive Director of the Nonprofit Risk Management Center in Washington, D.C., will provide both the keynote presentation and an afternoon breakout session on some of the most important risk management issues facing nonprofits today.  The Keynote will focus on “Great Governance, Financial Health and Your Mission:  Perfect Harmony or Perfect Storm?”  Most nonprofit directors acknowledge their stewardship and fiduciary roles, but wrongly believe that governance structure is inherited from the founders and fiscal oversight is the job of the finance and audit committee, leaving members “here for the mission” off the hook.  This session will give practical examples of how and why great governance is a must when mission truly matters.

We will begin the morning with our panel of lawyers who deal with nonprofit legal issues every day reviewing the most important legal developments for nonprofits during the last year.

The first round of afternoon breakout sessions will include:

  • Melanie Herman on the top 10 legal risks facing nonprofits today
  • Ensuring a harassment and discrimination free workplace
  • Vetting gifts of complex financial instruments

The second round will feature:

  • Latest developments in employee benefits
  • The edifice complex – protecting your buildings as intellectual property
  • Ethical issues for lawyers and executives

Participants will receive a new or renewed one-year subscription to Nonprofit Issues®, plus program materials.  The program starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 3:45 p.m.  The registration fee is $155, but additional registrants from the same organization may attend for $85.  We will provide you with lunch and materials. Register now, space is limited. This program will be held in the Philadelphia office of Montgomery McCracken, 123 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19109.
