A cook for the Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley is not covered by unemployment compensation because the School is not an “employer” under the Pennsylvania unemployment compensation law, the state’s Commonwealth Court has ruled. The law excludes “an organization which is operated primarily for religious purposes and which is operated, supervised, controlled or principally supported by a church or convention or association of churches.” The School stated its mission was to provide “a well-rounded general studies curriculum, a richly fortified Jewish education and a deep commitment to the land and people of Israel.” It is administered by a board formed specifically to provide a religious...
