Court dismisses suit against “University” in religious network

A federal District Court in California has dismissed a negligence claim against a “University” within an international religious network that published information about a training program in which a participant was permanently paralyzed in a rope line accident. Jaco Van Maanen had participated in a Youth With a Mission training school in the Netherlands in 2007 and became interested in further training. He found reference to a 2008 training program at Youth With a Mission-Bishop (California) by reading a publication of University of the Nations, a Hawaiian nonprofit corporation affiliated with the network. We were walking in Center City Philadelphia on the Saturday night before St. Patrick’s Day. We thought it was pretty nice that the police had closed off a full block of one of the major streets for a neighborhood St. Patrick’s Day party. We really felt quite safe, until we saw that one of the squad cars parked on the sidewalk was from the city’s Counter Terrorism Unit.
