Court keeps Florida Christian Coalition in tax limbo

The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed a decision of a Federal District Court that refuses to allow the nonprofit Christian Coalition of Florida to pursue litigation that could determine its tax-exempt status. ( See Nonprofit Issues®, 9/16/10 .) The Court has said that the Declaratory Judgment Act and the Anti-Injunction both prohibit the suit. The Coalition describes itself as an “advocacy organization” that “teaches concern for the sanctity of life, traditional family values, an economic system which fosters individual self-reliance, and faith in God.” It engages in a substantial amount of lobbying and regularly publishes voter guides and legislative scorecards.
