Court refuses to consider nonbelievers’ challenge to church exemption

A federal District Court in the District of Columbia has dismissed a case challenging the constitutionality of requiring a 501(c)(3) organization of religious nonbelievers to file an annual Form 990 tax information return while not requiring churches to do so also. The case was brought by NonBelief Relief, which was originally recognized as exempt after its incorporation in 2015. Its purpose is “to improve conditions in this world, including by seeking to help remediate conditions of human suffering and injustice on a global scale, whether the result of natural disasters, human actions or adherence to religious dogma.” It specifically helps atheists and other nonreligious individuals.
