Nonprofit hospital denied real estate tax exemption

The New Jersey Tax Court has denied real estate tax exemption to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit hospital corporation on the grounds that it failed to prove it is not operated for profit. The opinion, which with appendices and footnotes takes up 38 pages of Westlaw printout, chronicles more than 150 years of tax exemption law in the state. It concludes that modern healthcare centers have moved a long way from traditional charitable hospital concepts and that many aspects of the system are operated for profit.
