School ordered to bargain effects of restructuring

A federal District Court in Massachusetts has granted an injunction requested by the National Labor Relations Board and ordered the Longey School of Music to bargain with a newly certified union about the effects of the School’s restructuring. The Court said the order was an attempt to restore the union to the bargaining position it would have had if not for Longy’s unilateral changes in faculty positions and assignments. The School began discussing a new strategic plan shortly after a new president was hired in 2007. The ultimate proposal called for laying off some of the part time faculty and strengthening a “core faculty” for whom the School was the primary place of employment. Towards...
