Your Legal Questions Answered

Can meeting minutes be posted online?

We are a 501(c)(6) trade association. One of our members has requested we post our board of directors meeting minutes on the association's website. We always distribute the minutes to our board but are reluctant to post them on our website for "the world" to view. Legally, what is our responsibility to make minutes available?

Ordinarily, members of a nonprofit corporation have a right to review the minutes of Board meetings, although there is no legal obligation for the organization to send them to all members. If you want the members to have easy access to the minutes, you could post them on your website in a member-only, password-protected area. They would be available to the members but not to "the world."
