A health care provider may select its own interpreter to assist a deaf patient in obtaining care, a federal District Court in Colorado has held, and is not required to utilize a person requested by the patient. A woman who had been a patient at a woman’s health clinic for 15 years requested an interpreter from a specific agency when she asked for an appointment. She said she was familiar with the agency and felt confident that one of its interpreters would provide her with effective communication.
